Research

Head of the Soft Matter Group at Queen Mary University of London since 1994. The group currently includes four researchassistants (RCUK funded) and 10 PhD students (EU, Birla Carbon, Weir Group, Swedish Govt, Thai Govt, EPSRC, Aston MartinF1, SRI & Schlumberger funded). James has successfully supervised 40 completed PhD students (16 in the last five years) and100+ masters students. He has been awarded 32 grants since 2017 with a value of £2,928,307. The group examines thephysical behaviour of soft matter such as elastomers and textile materials. Properties of interest include abrasion, friction,fracture, creep, fatigue, viscoelastic behaviour, modulus enhancement, self-healing, sustainability, ageing and fillerreinforcement. The group also works on smart soft materials that sense their environment and actuate and can change shapein response to a physical stimulus.
